Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - The national capital logged 52 dengue cases in April,2026 the highest number for the month in the last five years, according to data released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). This marks a concerning early surge in vector-borne diseases as the city gears up for the monsoon season. Overall, Delhi has recorded 107 dengue cases in the first four months of 2026 till April.
The April figure shows a steady rise compared to previous years, with 42 cases in April 2025, 31 in 2024, 24 in 2023, and just 12 in 2022. Officials have attributed the increase partly to sporadic rainfall in April, which created favourable breeding conditions for mosquitoes. In response, the MCD has ramped up pre-emptive actions including intensified anti-larval operations, fogging, and regular inspections at construction sites and residential areas to curb potential outbreaks during the peak transmission period.
Alongside dengue, the city reported 29 malaria cases in the January-April period, lower than 39 in the same period last year but higher than 15 in 2023. The civic body conducted over 12.15 lakh house visits by early May, identifying mosquito breeding in nearly 15,649 houses. Authorities issued more than 16,000 legal notices and initiated 1,712 prosecutions. They also deployed larvivorous fish through 358 Guppy-8 interventions. Health experts urge residents to eliminate stagnant water and follow precautions as warmer temperatures and rains could accelerate disease spread in the coming months.
