New Delhi, August 23 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the national capital after forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next 24 hours.
Officials have warned of possible waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic jams, and disruptions in public transport as the city prepares for intense showers. The alert comes at a time when several parts of Delhi are already struggling with drainage issues due to continuous rainfall over the past few days.
The IMD has advised residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering under trees, and take precautions against possible lightning strikes. Emergency services have also been asked to remain on standby to tackle situations arising out of heavy water accumulation and strong winds.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with the Delhi Traffic Police cautioning commuters about slow movement on major routes. Metro services are expected to run, though officials have said last-minute changes could be made depending on weather conditions.
With schools and offices already reporting disruptions earlier in the week due to rain, the latest red alert has raised concerns about further challenges for daily life in the capital.
