The Delhi High Court has directed the city government to pay a compensation of 1 crore to the widow of a school principal who lost his life due to Covid-19 during the peak of the pandemic. The order came after the court observed that frontline workers, including teachers and principals, had put their lives at risk to keep essential services running.
The case was filed by the widow, who argued that her husband contracted the virus while carrying out official duties and that the family was left without adequate support after his death. The court agreed that the sacrifice made by educators during the crisis must not be overlooked.
In its ruling, the bench noted that the government had a responsibility to extend financial relief to families of Covid warriors who died while performing their duties. It directed that the compensation should be paid within a fixed timeline without further delay.
The judgment has been welcomed by education bodies and teachers’ associations, who said it sets an important precedent in recognizing the contribution of educators during emergencies. They also urged the government to ensure that all such cases are addressed with urgency and fairness.
The Delhi government is now expected to release the payment and provide the necessa-1ry documentation to the family in compliance with the court’s directive.
