Ananya Lohia , Delhi - The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Centre to monitor the health of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on a daily basis as he continues his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, with the government assuring the court that necessary medical assistance will be provided based on doctors' assessments.
Hearing a plea seeking urgent medical intervention, the High Court observed that every citizen's life is precious and ordered regular health check-ups for Wangchuk. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, assured the bench that government doctors would closely monitor his condition and provide immediate medical treatment if required.
Sonam Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike since June 28 as part of a protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the examination system and the NEET-UG paper leak. Despite growing support from Opposition leaders and civil society, Wangchuk has said he will continue his protest while urging supporters to join the planned "Sansad Chalo" march on July 20.
With Wangchuk's hunger strike entering its 19th day, the High Court's intervention has placed the focus on safeguarding his health even as the protest continues and pressure mounts for a resolution through dialogue.
