Delhi HC Refuses Immediate Transfer of Sonam Wangchuk to Private Hospital

Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - The Delhi High Court on Sunday refused to immediately allow activist Sonam Wangchuk's transfer from Safdarjung Hospital to a private medical facility. The court directed authorities to submit a fresh health report within three days and listed the matter for hearing on July 24.

Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, approached the High Court seeking permission to shift him to a private hospital, alleging she had lost faith in the treatment at Safdarjung Hospital. Through senior advocate Kapil Sibal, she argued that Wangchuk should be allowed treatment at a hospital of his choice and sought unrestricted access for his personal doctors and lawyers.

The Centre opposed the plea, stating that Wangchuk's health had deteriorated after 21 days of fasting and that doctors were closely monitoring his condition. The High Court observed that he was not under detention, his family had access to him, and no force was being used in his treatment. Finding no grounds for immediate intervention, the court declined interim relief.

The High Court said there was no need for immediate transfer at this stage and will review Wangchuk's health status again on July 24.
