Delhi Braces for More Rain After Saturday Showers Cool NCR, Marks Cleanest May in 5 Years

Ranit Kr. Singh , New Delhi — Delhi and the wider National Capital Region (NCR) are expected to experience another round of light rain and thunderstorms on Sunday, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 km/h in the evening. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a generally cloudy sky will persist across the capital as well as neighboring Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida, and Ghaziabad. This fresh forecast follows a spell of heavy winds and light-to-moderate showers on Saturday afternoon that successfully brought down temperatures across the region and significantly cleansed the local atmosphere.

The weekend downpour triggered a noticeable drop in mercury, with the city's primary weather station at Safdarjung 24.6°C, two degrees below the seasonal normal and a steady decline from earlier in the week. Other regional stations recorded varying rainfall amounts between 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm, ranging from a trace in Palam to 4 mm in Mayur Vihar. Saturday's maximum temperature settled comfortably at 37.2 degrees Celsius, sitting 3.2 degrees below the seasonal average, offering residents a welcome respite from intense summer heat.

The persistent wind and rain also drove Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) down to a "satisfactory" 85 on Saturday, capping off an exceptionally clean month. Data from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) confirmed that May 2026 has emerged as Delhi’s cleanest May in five years, since 2021. According to CREA data till the end of May, the capital celebrated four satisfactory air days, 20 moderate days, and just six poor days, achieving an impressive monthly average AQI of 161.
