Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has recently come under scrutiny on social media for wearing a hijab in a tourism advertisement promoting Abu Dhabi, featuring her alongside husband Ranveer Singh. Critics have accused her of hypocrisy, citing her previous advocacy for women's freedom of choice, particularly referencing her 2015 "My Choice" campaign.
However, many of Deepika's fans have rallied to her defense, emphasizing that her attire was a sign of respect for the local culture. They pointed out that visitors to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque are required to dress modestly, including women covering their heads. One supporter remarked, "As Indians, we need not show insecurity about everything. She is covering her head just like we would expect foreign tourists to wear decent clothes in our temples."
The advertisement showcases the couple exploring various cultural landmarks in Abu Dhabi, with Deepika donning a red abaya and headscarf during a visit to the mosque. Ranveer Singh also appears in traditional attire, reflecting the region's customs.
