Hong Kong is mourning after a devastating fire swept through a massive high-rise apartment complex called Wang Fuk Court in the Tai Po district. The blaze, which began during the week, quickly became the deadliest the city has seen in decades, claiming the lives of at least 65 people so far. Hundreds more were still missing as the fire raged for over 20 hours, engulfing seven out of the complex’s eight towers. This disaster has brought a terrible wave of sadness and worry across the community as families wait for news of their loved ones.

​Authorities are now urgently trying to figure out why this fire became so massive. Investigators believe the blaze started in the complex’s traditional bamboo scaffolding before spreading rapidly. A major problem appears to be the materials used during the building’s ongoing renovation. It is suspected that the protective mesh and plastic netting covering the scaffolding did not meet fire safety rules. This substandard material is thought to have fueled the flames, causing the fire to burn much hotter and spread much faster than it should have.

​The tragedy has rightly raised serious questions about building safety standards across the city. The police have taken swift action, arresting two directors and an engineering consultant from the maintenance company on suspicion of manslaughter. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive has promised a full investigation into the disaster and announced plans to inspect all other government-subsidised housing estates undergoing major repairs. The hope is that by reviewing construction safety, faith can be restored in the security of the city's homes.
