Chennai - A powerful cyclonic storm named Senyar has formed, causing concern across coastal parts of India. Weather experts confirm that the storm intensified quickly in the Strait of Malacca. While the main Cyclone Senyar is expected to make landfall near the coast of Indonesia, a related and worrying low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is building up. This second system is the real threat, and it is set to bring heavy, continuous rain and strong winds to large areas of South India, especially the state of Tamil Nadu.
The turbulent weather has already made life difficult for many people. Earlier this week, heavy downpours lashed several districts, leading to major flooding in residential areas like Tuticorin. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning, predicting that the intense rainfall and thunderstorms will continue until the end of the week across Tamil Nadu, along with parts of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Locals are being asked to take caution and stay indoors to remain safe from the gusty winds and severe weather.
Because of the previous heavy rains and the threat of flooding, local governments had already closed schools and colleges on Tuesday to ensure student safety. However, an official decision regarding whether these closures would continue for the following day was still awaited. Authorities are on high alert, preparing emergency teams and keeping a close watch on the weather forecast. They urge all residents to follow safety instructions and listen for immediate updates from the government as the stormy conditions persist.
