Curfew Imposed in Nepal’s Birgunj Near Indian Border Amid Rising Communal Tensions

Desk Correspondent , Nepal - An indefinite curfew has been imposed in the sub-metropolitan city of Birgunj, Nepal, following a significant surge in communal tensions. The local administration in the Parsa district issued the order on Tuesday to curb potential violence after clashes broke out between two groups during a demonstration. The unrest reportedly stems from a dispute that began during a rally, which quickly escalated into stone-pelting and confrontations, prompting security forces to intervene with tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Birgunj, a vital trade hub located near the Indian border at Raxaul, is now under heavy surveillance, with all public gatherings, rallies, and movements restricted within the city limits. District officials stated that the curfew was a necessary "preemptive measure" to maintain law and order and prevent the spread of misinformation that could further inflame religious or communal sentiments. Educational institutions and markets in the affected areas have been shut down, leaving the streets deserted as armed police personnel conduct regular patrols.

The situation in Birgunj has also raised concerns across the border in India. Given the town's proximity to Bihar, Indian border authorities have increased vigilance at the Raxaul crossing to ensure that the unrest does not spill over or impact cross-border movement. While no casualties have been officially reported, the atmosphere remains highly charged. Local leaders from various communities have been called upon by the administration to appeal for peace and harmony as the government works to stabilize the region and identify the instigators of the unrest.
