News Desk : With the death toll in the Taratala warehouse collapse rising to nine, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari launched a scathing attack on the previous Trinamool Congress government, alleging that faulty building approvals and unsafe construction practices led to the tragedy.
Addressing the Assembly on Thursday, Adhikari held up documents that he claimed showed the under-construction warehouse had received approval from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation during the previous administration. Calling it a "faulty building plan", he vowed strict action against those responsible. “Nobody will be spared. These are the sins of the previous regime,” the Chief Minister said, accusing the former government of allowing unsafe and illegal construction projects to flourish. The Chief Minister confirmed that the death toll had climbed to nine, while around 20 injured workers remain under treatment.
Rescue teams continued operations through the day as authorities searched for any remaining trapped labourers. Five people have been arrested in connection with the collapse. In response to the disaster, the state government announced ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of those killed and Rs 1 lakh for the injured and PM separately announces Rs 2 lakh each for the families who lost their lives in the tragedy.
As investigations gather pace, the Taratala tragedy has triggered a political storm over construction safety and accountability. With arrests made and a citywide audit ordered, the focus has now shifted from rescue operations to fixing responsibility for one of Kolkata's deadliest construction disasters in recent years.
