China has reacted strongly to former US President Donald Trump’s recent comments suggesting that Chinese President Xi Jinping would not invade Taiwan. Beijing reiterated that Taiwan is an internal matter and warned against external interference in the issue.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that no one should underestimate China’s determination to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The official stressed that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China and the matter concerns its core national interests.
Trump, in an interview, had remarked that Xi Jinping would not invade Taiwan, sparking renewed debate over US-China relations. While Washington maintains a “One China” policy, it also continues to provide military support to Taipei, a point of ongoing friction between the two powers.
