Veteran India batter Cheteshwar Pujara on Friday announced his retirement from international cricket, drawing the curtains on a distinguished career that spanned more than a decade. Known as the backbone of India’s Test batting line-up, Pujara said he was proud of his contributions and grateful for the opportunities.
In a heartfelt statement, the 36-year-old reflected on his journey: “When I set out on this path, I aimed for the stars. I wanted to represent my country and play at the highest level, and I am humbled that I could live that dream.”
Pujara made his Test debut in 2010 and went on to play over 100 matches, amassing more than 7,000 runs, including memorable performances in India’s overseas victories. His gritty batting, particularly in Australia and England, earned him the reputation of a modern-day wall, carrying forward the legacy of Rahul Dravid.
He acknowledged the support of teammates, coaches, and fans throughout his career. “This journey wouldn’t have been possible without my family, my mentors, and the unwavering support of Indian cricket fans. Every time I walked out with the India jersey, I felt immense pride and responsibility,” Pujara said.
While stepping away from the international stage, Pujara hinted at continuing in domestic and county cricket. His retirement marks the end of an era for India’s Test side, which relied heavily on his resilience during challenging overseas tours.
