New Delhi, August 19 — The central government is set to introduce three significant bills in Parliament on Monday, aimed at disqualifying the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Ministers from office if they remain under arrest for more than 30 days.
According to sources, the move is being positioned as a step to uphold accountability in public office. The proposed laws would bar any leader facing extended custody from continuing in their post until cleared by the courts.
The government is expected to present the bills in both Houses, sparking a likely heated debate between the treasury and opposition benches. While ruling party leaders argue that the legislation will strengthen democratic integrity, critics say the timing and framing could open the door for political misuse.
Legal experts point out that existing provisions under the Representation of the People Act already provide disqualification grounds in certain criminal cases. However, the new proposals go further, directly targeting serving heads of government and ministers, a move without precedent in Indian parliamentary history.
Opposition parties have indicated they will strongly contest the bills, calling them “politically motivated” and warning against undermining constitutional offices. The government, however, has maintained that the step is necessary to ensure citizens’ trust in governance.
The bills are scheduled for introduction later today, and their progress is likely to dominate the ongoing parliamentary session.
