The Border Security Force (BSF) has intercepted 200 Pakistani drones and seized 287 kg of heroin along the Indo-Pak border in 2025. Additionally, the BSF arrested 219 smugglers, including 16 Pakistani nationals, and recovered 13 kg of methamphetamine (ICE), 174 firearms, 12 hand grenades, and over 10 kg of explosives.
The increase in arrests follows the Indian government's 2021 decision to extend the BSF's operational jurisdiction from 15 km to 50 km inside Punjab and other border states. This move empowered the BSF to conduct searches, seizures, and arrests in a broader area. While the Punjab Congress government opposed this extension, citing concerns over federal structure, the Centre maintained that the decision was within its powers to protect border areas.
In response to the growing drone threat, the BSF has enhanced its surveillance capabilities by deploying night vision devices, motion sensors, and anti-drone systems. These measures have enabled the BSF to track, intercept, and neutralize aerial intrusions effectively. Collaborative operations with Punjab Police and other central agencies have also been instrumental in dismantling smuggling networks operating along the 553 km-long India-Pakistan border in Punjab.
