BJP, NTA Object to Word ‘Leak’ in Fractious Parliamentary Meet on NEET-UG

Ranit Kr. Singh , New Delhi - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Testing Agency (NTA) strongly objected to the use of the word "leak" during a fractious Parliament standing committee meeting on Education on Thursday. The panel, headed by Congress MP Digvijaya Singh, met to discuss the cancellation and reconduction of this year's NEET-UG medical entrance exam amid breach allegations. While opposition members clashed with the ruling party over the terminology used in the proceedings and agenda, both the NTA and the education ministry firmly maintained that the incident was "not a leak."

The development comes after the NTA cancelled the May 3 examination following inputs from law enforcement agencies confirming the process was compromised. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has arrested 10 individuals, noted in a remand application that confidential exam questions were circulated in PDF format via WhatsApp prior to the test. To prevent future malpractices, the Centre informed the panel that it is considering significant long-term reforms, including shifting to a digital, computer-based testing format by next year, introducing an upper age limit, and capping the number of exam attempts for aspirants.

The re-test for the nationwide medical entrance examination is scheduled to be held on June 21, 2026. Commenting on the investigative findings that forced the cancellation, the NTA stated, "The decision has been taken in view of the inputs received, taken together with the findings shared by the law enforcement agencies, established that the present examination process could not be allowed to stand."
