The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has released a list of 1,804 'tainted' teachers from the 2016 State Level Selection Test (SLST). This action follows a Supreme Court directive issued on August 28, which mandated the Commission to make the names public within a week. On April 3, the Supreme Court had previously invalidated the appointments of 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff in state-aided schools, describing the entire recruitment process as "vitiated and tainted".
These individuals are now barred from participating in the new recruitment examinations, which are scheduled for September 7 and September 14. The Supreme Court specifically instructed the WBSSC to ensure that no 'tainted' candidates were permitted to take the fresh selection tests. The broader investigation into alleged irregularities in government school recruitments began in May 2022, with the Calcutta High Court ordering a CBI probe into claims of bribes ranging from ₹5-15 lakh paid for jobs.
Concurrently, fresh recruitment exams are being conducted for 35,726 vacant posts. Around 3.19 lakh candidates are anticipated to sit for the exam for classes IX and X on Sunday, with an additional 2.54 lakh appearing for classes XI and XII on September 14. To prevent malpractice, WBSSC officials have embedded unique identification security features into every question paper. While some 'untainted' candidates expressed satisfaction that the list is out, others questioned why they must re-appear for examinations.
