The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to relieve Rohit Sharma of his role as the captain of India’s One Day International (ODI) team. Shubman Gill will assume the ODI captaincy starting with the upcoming three-match series against Australia, set to begin on October 19 in Perth.
This shift is part of a long-term strategy by the Indian cricket establishment to groom Gill, at age 26, to lead India in the 2027 ODI World Cup which will be hosted across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Gill already captains the Indian Test side and serves as vice-captain in T20Is, so this move aligns his leadership roles across formats.
Rohit, 38, will remain a part of the squad and continue playing as a senior player. Under his captaincy, India played 56 ODIs, winning 42, losing 12 — a winning percentage around 75%. Since taking over from Virat Kohli in December 2021, Rohit oversaw India’s Asia Cup win in 2023 and their campaign to the final of the 50-over World Cup.
