BCCI Rejects Idea of Farewell Series for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

New Delhi, August 23 — The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed speculation about hosting a farewell series for senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, stressing that the board does not follow such practices.

Reports earlier suggested that a special bilateral series could be organised to honour the two stalwarts, who recently stepped away from T20 internationals after leading India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title. However, BCCI officials clarified that the board’s policy has always been performance-driven, with no provisions for farewell matches.

“Our policy is very clear. We don’t organise farewell series for any player. Decisions are based on team requirements and future planning,” a senior board member told media.

The statement comes amid growing fan demand to celebrate Kohli and Sharma’s contributions to Indian cricket. Both players have been instrumental in shaping India’s batting dominance over the past decade, with Kohli emerging as one of the world’s most prolific run-scorers and Sharma establishing himself as a record-breaking opener.

Cricket analysts note that while individual milestones are celebrated, BCCI has historically avoided farewell series, preferring players to make their exits organically. Past legends, including MS Dhoni, also retired without a formal farewell match.

While Kohli and Sharma continue to remain active in ODIs and Tests, their long-term future will depend on form, fitness, and the selectors’ roadmap for the 2027 World Cup cycle.
