Ananya Lohia , Kolkata - Prabhas Mondal, the prime accused in the rape and murder of an 12-year old girl in Baruipur, was shot dead in a police encounter after he allegedly snatched an officer's firearm and attempted to flee custody during a crime scene reconstruction. The prime accused mother refused to accept his body.
According to reports, Mondal was taken to Suryapur around midnight for crime scene recreation, where he fired at police in an escape attempt and was fatally shot in retaliatory action. This was the first encounter after BJP government in West Bengal. The media spoke to Prabhash’s mother, Sandhya, after the encounter that killed her son, his mother, publicly stated that she would not bring his body into her house, declaring that he committed a terrible crime and got what he deserved.
The victim's body has been recovered from a pond on July 5, stuffed inside a sack. The autopsy confirmed sexual assault and severe injusries. Two other accomplices, Ananda Sardar and Dibakar Sardar, were also arrested and booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and POCSO Act. The gruesome nature of the crime and the delay in police action sparked severe mob violence in Baruipur, leaving property and police vehicles vandalized.
The investigation into the case is continuing, with the two co-accused remaining in police custody. The incident has triggered widespread public outrage and renewed calls for swift justice and stronger measures to protect children from such crimes.
