Authorities in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, have placed the city on high alert and tightened security ahead of Friday prayers, following violent clashes over the “I Love Muhammad” poster controversy. The internet, mobile data, SMS services, and broadband connections have been suspended in four districts until 3 pm on Saturday to curb rumor-mongering and communal agitation.
The city had witnessed mass unrest last week when more than 2,000 protesters gathered outside a mosque following a cleric’s call for a demonstration, which was later cancelled by authorities. The fallout included stone-pelting, clashes with police, and the arrest of 81 individuals.
In preparation for the day’s prayers, police, PAC, RAF units have been deployed across sensitive zones, while drones patrol the skies. Strict orders have been issued to district officials, with warnings of stern action for any lapses. High alert status extends to neighboring districts including Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, and Budaun.
