Bangladesh President Shahabuddin Resigns Amid Political Tensions

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin has reportedly resigned, with local and regional reports saying the move comes amid tensions with the government and growing speculation around Sheikh Hasina’s planned return. The resignation, if confirmed, marks a significant political shift in Dhaka at a time of deep uncertainty.

Reports said Shahabuddin’s exit followed signs of a widening rift with the ruling establishment, including claims that he had tried to reconnect with Hasina, who has been living in exile since her government was toppled in 2024. Some reports also linked the decision to health concerns, saying he was no longer able to carry out his duties effectively.

The development comes as Sheikh Hasina has publicly signalled plans to return to Bangladesh, despite a death sentence handed down in absentia and continuing legal and political battles. Her possible comeback has already sharpened tensions among Bangladesh’s main political forces, with rivals warning that her return could destabilise the country further.

Shahabuddin’s reported resignation appears tied to a broader struggle over Bangladesh’s political future, especially as Hasina’s return draws closer. If confirmed, it could deepen the already fragile balance between the interim order, the ruling camp and the opposition.
