Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, on Wednesday accused the banned Awami League of operating from Indian soil, warning that such activities could seriously damage bilateral ties. Dhaka's foreign ministry alleged that offices of the outlawed Awami League, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, had been "reportedly established" in New Delhi and Kolkata. They further claimed that senior Awami League leaders, absconding in criminal cases, were residing in India and had planned a "public outreach" event in Delhi.
Dhaka asserted that such political activity against Bangladesh's interests, particularly by a banned party and absconding leaders, is an "affront to the people and the State of Bangladesh" and risks "good-neighbourly relations". Bangladesh urged India to take "immediate steps to prevent any anti-Bangladesh activity".
India, in a swift rebuttal, dismissed the claims as "misplaced". External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the Indian government is "not aware of any anti-Bangladesh activities" by purported Awami League members or any action "contrary to Indian law". Jaiswal reiterated that India does not permit political activity against foreign nations on its soil and reiterated India's call for "free, fair and inclusive elections" in Bangladesh. The Awami League was banned in Bangladesh in May 2025.
