Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Australia and India have finalised an agreement that will allow Australian uranium exports to India for civilian energy use, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. The deal removes a long-standing obstacle in the relationship and is meant to support India’s nuclear energy expansion.

The arrangement builds on the 2014 civil nuclear cooperation agreement and the administrative steps needed to put uranium sales into practice. Australian officials said the exports will be for “exclusively peaceful purposes” and will operate under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards. For India, the supply is meant to help meet rising electricity demand and strengthen its non-fossil energy mix.

The agreement also fits into a broader package of India-Australia cooperation that includes defence and critical minerals. Modi said the two countries have “historic opportunities” to work together in nuclear energy, renewable energy and green hydrogen, signalling that the uranium deal is part of a wider strategic and economic reset. Reports also note that the two sides see critical minerals as a key area for future supply-chain cooperation.

The uranium deal is a major milestone because it turns years of negotiation into a concrete energy partnership. It also shows how India and Australia are widening ties beyond trade into long-term strategic cooperation.
