In a tragic early morning accident on the Kampala-Gulu highway in western Uganda, at least 63 people lost their lives when two buses and two other vehicles collided in a catastrophic head-on crash.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight near Kiryandongo. Authorities say that each bus was attempting to overtake vehicles travelling in opposite directions, resulting in a violent collision which triggered a chain-reaction involving the other vehicles.  Several passengers were injured and rushed to nearby medical facilities, while the deceased were taken to the local mortuary for identification.

Road safety officials highlighted that reckless overtaking and speeding remain major contributors to fatal traffic accidents in Uganda, where infrastructure and traffic law enforcement are often inadequate.  The magnitude of the disaster has prompted national condolences, and emergency response teams continue to work at the site to recover victims and investigate the exact sequence of events.
