The Assam government on Tuesday introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the state assembly, marking a major step toward implementing common civil laws for all communities in the state. The proposed legislation focuses on issues related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and property rights, aiming to create a uniform legal framework regardless of religion.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the bill is intended to strengthen women’s rights, promote gender equality, and ensure equal legal protection for every citizen. According to the government, the new law will also make marriage registration compulsory and introduce stricter rules against practices such as polygamy and child marriage.
The introduction of the bill sparked strong reactions inside the assembly. While the ruling party described the move as historic and progressive, opposition leaders criticized it, arguing that it could affect the cultural and religious identity of minority communities. Several opposition members demanded wider public consultation before the bill is passed.
The Assam government stated that the bill has been prepared after studying legal reforms in other states and recommendations from constitutional experts. If approved, Assam could become one of the first states in the country to implement a comprehensive Uniform Civil Code framework.
