Meerut, August 19 — An Army jawan of the Rajput Regiment was brutally assaulted by toll plaza staff in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut after requesting priority passage while returning to duty in Srinagar. The incident, which took place late Sunday, has sparked public outrage and official intervention.
According to police, the jawan, identified as Kapil Singh, was on his way to Delhi to catch a flight when his car was caught in a traffic jam at Bhuni Toll Plaza. He displayed his service identity card and asked staff to allow him through. Instead, he was allegedly tied to a pole and beaten with sticks. His cousin, who was accompanying him, was also assaulted.
Videos of the attack went viral on social media, triggering anger among locals. On Monday, farmers and villagers stormed the toll plaza, vandalised property, and made the passage free for commuters. A heavy police force was deployed to restore order.
In response, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) imposed a ₹20 lakh fine on the toll operator and began the process of terminating its license. Police registered a case and arrested six employees connected with the assault.
The Indian Army has condemned the attack, while state authorities assured strict action. The incident has reignited debate on the safety and respect of defence personnel in civilian spaces.
Officials said further investigation is underway to determine accountability and prevent similar occurrences.
