Amaravati Declared Permanent Capital of Andhra Pradesh

Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - Parliament has passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, officially designating Amaravati as the state’s sole and permanent capital, ending more than a decade of administrative uncertainty. The Lok Sabha cleared the bill on April 1, 2026, giving it legal force with retrospective effect from June 2, 2024, so that Amaravati is now recognised as Andhra Pradesh’s capital under the amended Reorganisation Act.

The bill amends the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, which had kept Hyderabad as the common capital for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for a 10 year transition period. With the new amendment, Amaravati is locked in as the only capital of Andhra Pradesh, preventing any future change without another parliamentary override. The move fulfils a long held priority of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), who had initiated Amaravati’s development soon after the 2014 bifurcation and later pushed the state assembly and Centre for a clear, permanent status.

By granting Amaravati permanent capital status, the government aims to stabilise land policy, attract private investment, and fast track infrastructure projects, including smart city elements and new government complexes. Union ministers and state leaders have described the decision as a “watershed moment,” putting an end to speculation about shifting the capital to Visakhapatnam or elsewhere and giving investors and residents long‑term confidence in Amaravati’s role as the political and administrative nerve centre of Andhra Pradesh.
