Desk Correspondent , Dispur - In a high-stakes urban showdown during the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, 27-year-old Kunki Chowdhury has emerged as the Assam Jatiya Parishad’s (AJP) fresh face, contesting from the newly carved Guwahati Central constituency as part of the Congress-led opposition alliance, Asom Sonmilito Morcha. A first-time candidate with no prior electoral record, Chowdhury represents a bold generational shift, positioning herself as a voice for youth-driven governance and systemic change in a seat dominated by middle-class voters, professionals, and young electors. Her candidacy has drawn national attention, particularly after a public spat with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in April, where remarks about her family sparked controversy that she reframed as evidence of rising opposition momentum and youth influence in state politics.
Chowdhury, who hails from a prominent Guwahati business family, brings an impressive academic and civic background to the fray. She holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from NMIMS with a focus on family business and entrepreneurship, followed by a Master’s in Educational Leadership from University College London. Before entering politics, she contributed to her family-run non-profit, overseeing educational institutions across Assam, which has shaped her campaign priorities around improving schooling, infrastructure, community development, traffic congestion, drainage, flooding, garbage management, and primary healthcare—key concerns in this urban constituency. She faces BJP veteran Vijay Kumar Gupta in what is expected to be one of the most watched contests, highlighting AJP’s strategy to challenge established dominance with younger leadership.
Political observers see Chowdhury’s debut as part of a broader youth wave in Assam’s polls, targeting first-time voters and reflecting evolving urban aspirations. Guwahati Central, previously part of Guwahati West, underscores governance challenges in Assam’s cities. While early trends in some reports showed Gupta leading, the race remains symbolic of the contest between veteran experience and Gen Z energy. Chowdhury’s campaign emphasizes bridging the gap between government and public, advocating inclusive regionalism and educated voices in decision-making. As results unfold on May 4, her performance could signal shifting dynamics in urban Assam, testing whether youth-centric platforms can translate into electoral gains against entrenched players.
