Mumbai, August 18 — Veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane has announced that he will not continue as Mumbai’s captain in domestic cricket, stating that it is time for a new leader to take charge. The 36-year-old, who has been an influential figure in the Ranji Trophy setup, said he wanted to give younger players an opportunity to lead.
Rahane, who has captained Mumbai across multiple seasons, led the team to the Ranji Trophy final in 2023–24, where they finished runners-up. Widely respected for his calm leadership and tactical awareness, he has been instrumental in nurturing young talent in Mumbai’s cricketing circuit.
In a statement, Rahane mentioned that the decision was not easy but necessary for the team’s future. “I feel this is the right moment to hand over the responsibility. Mumbai cricket is about producing leaders and I believe the next generation is ready,” he said.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is expected to announce Rahane’s successor soon, with several young players already being considered for the role. Rahane, however, confirmed he will continue to play and contribute as a senior member of the side.
