Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - Air India has officially announced a strategic reduction in its international flight frequencies for the May-July 2024 period, primarily driven by unforeseen delays in aircraft maintenance and a shortage of technical spare parts. The airline, now under the ownership of the Tata Group, confirmed that the temporary adjustments are necessary to ensure fleet reliability and long-term operational safety. While the carrier is currently undergoing a massive multi-billion-dollar transformation and fleet renewal program, the immediate grounding of several Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliner aircraft for mandatory heavy maintenance checks has created a capacity vacuum that cannot be filled by the existing operational fleet. However, by mid-to-late 2024, many of these issues began to stabilize as the airline integrated newer leased aircraft and started receiving deliveries from its massive 470-plane order.
The flight cancellations and frequency reductions primarily impact high-traffic long-haul routes connecting major Indian hubs to North America and Europe. Specifically, services from Delhi and Mumbai to cities such as San Francisco, Vancouver, and London Heathrow are seeing a notable decrease in weekly rotations. Passengers booked on affected flights are being offered full refunds or complimentary re-accommodation on alternative dates. Industry analysts suggest that the global supply chain crisis affecting engine manufacturers and component suppliers has exacerbated the situation, making it difficult for Air India to return grounded planes to service as quickly as initially projected.
Despite these short-term disruptions, Air India remains committed to its "Vihaan.AI" transformation roadmap, which aims to significantly expand its international footprint over the next five years. The airline has clarified that these cuts are localized to specific timeframes and do not represent a permanent withdrawal from any global markets. As new Airbus and Boeing aircraft from the record-breaking 470-plane order begin to arrive more frequently, the carrier expects to restore full capacity and introduce additional non-stop routes by the upcoming winter schedule. For now, travelers are advised to check their flight status regularly through the airline’s digital platforms.
