Air India is in advanced discussions with Airbus and Boeing to acquire up to 300 wide-body aircraft, marking a significant expansion of its fleet under the Tata Group's ownership. The negotiations include an additional 80 to 100 wide-body jets, supplementing earlier talks for 200 narrow-body jets and 25–30 wide-body planes.
This move aligns with Air India's strategy to rebrand itself as a modern global airline. The airline is considering both firm orders and options, though the exact breakdown between the two manufacturers has not been finalized. The discussions come amid efforts to recover from the Boeing 787 crash in Ahmedabad in June, which resulted in 260 fatalities.
In a related development, Air India's aircraft leasing subsidiary, AI Fleet Services IFSC (AIFS), secured a $215 million seven-year term loan from Standard Chartered and Bank of India. This funding will support the acquisition of six Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, further bolstering Air India's fleet renewal and expansion plans.
