The Modi government’s recently introduced online gaming law has come under its first legal challenge, with A23, one of the major gaming platforms in India, moving the Karnataka High Court.
The new law, which aims to regulate online gaming and curb betting and gambling activities, has sparked debate across the industry. While the government maintains that the law is necessary to protect users, especially minors, from addiction and financial exploitation, companies argue that the provisions are too restrictive and could hurt innovation and business growth.
A23, in its petition, has questioned the scope and implementation of the law, saying it places skill-based games in the same category as gambling. The company claims this could lead to confusion, discourage investors, and harm the livelihoods of thousands working in the sector.
Industry experts say the outcome of this case will set the tone for how online gaming is regulated in the country. With the sector witnessing rapid growth in recent years, stakeholders believe a balanced approach is necessary to safeguard both players and businesses.
The Karnataka High Court is expected to hear the matter in the coming days.
