Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - A quiet part of Gurugram's Sector 37 turned grim when a toddler, just three years old, was discovered dead in a shallow hole—raped and then killed, police say, by someone familiar to her, a man she often played with. Later on, a twenty-four-year-old man was arrested. He is from Bihar for work; admitting what he did in words shocked everyone nearby. He spilled out during questioning, leaving neighbours stunned, grief settling like dust after a collapse.
Thursday night, when it all started, February 19, as the little girl played near her house. From the same apartment complex, the accused—someone she knew—pulled her aside, tempting her to play. Officers later confirmed that he carried her to a vacant stretch of land, almost four kilometres off. There, hidden from sight, he assaulted her, then choked her until she stopped moving. Not the end yet, he scraped together a hole in the soil, dropped her in, covered it up, and went back as if nothing happened.
As hours passed, the child’s parents finally understood something was wrong—just after midnight, they reported her missing. Quick to respond, officers from Gurugram began checking surveillance videos nearby. Then a break: one clip showed a man leading the girl off, caught between 7:00 PM and 7:15 PM.
Shivnath ended up in police hands at two in the morning on Friday. When questioned, he broke down emotionally, then showed officers the spot near an old industrial lot—where they found the tortured body of the girl. He had been working at a nearby junkyard when it happened. The suspect, who worked at a local scrap factory, now faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder and Section 6 of the POCSO Act for aggravated sexual assault.
Even as the investigation continues, one fact lingers heavily—the incident gives us a clear reminder that the dangers kids can face are mostly from the people they know best.
