731 Displaced Persons Reportedly Die in Relief Camps Since Manipur Ethnic Violence Began

Shivani Jaiswal , Imphal-
A total of 731 displaced persons have reportedly died in relief camps across Manipur since the outbreak of ethnic violence in 2023, highlighting the prolonged humanitarian challenges faced by thousands of affected families.

The deaths were recorded among people who sought shelter in relief camps after being forced to flee their homes during the unrest. Many of the deceased were elderly individuals, children, and people suffering from chronic illnesses, according to information presented by officials. Health-related complications, inadequate living conditions, and disruptions in access to regular medical care are believed to have contributed to a significant number of the fatalities.

More than a year after the violence erupted, thousands of displaced residents continue to depend on relief camps for housing, food, healthcare, and other essential services. While authorities and aid agencies have undertaken efforts to improve camp facilities, concerns remain over sanitation, healthcare access, education for children, and long-term rehabilitation.

Community leaders and civil society groups have called for accelerated measures to facilitate the safe return and resettlement of displaced families. They have also urged the government to strengthen healthcare services within camps and provide additional support for vulnerable groups.

With multiple agencies working to address the needs of affected communities. However, the reported death toll has renewed attention on the lasting impact of the conflict and the challenges of supporting displaced populations over an extended period.
