Desk Correspondent , Imphal - At least six people were injured in multiple incidents of gunfire and arson in Manipur’s Ukhrul and Kamjong districts on Thursday, as armed militants targeted Tangkhul Naga villages along the Indo-Myanmar border. In Ukhrul, one villager sustained multiple bullet injuries during an attack near Sinakeithei village around 1pm by suspected Kuki militants. Police said security forces from the 6th Manipur Rifles retaliated swiftly, leading to an exchange of fire. The situation was brought under control after senior officers, including the Superintendent of Police, rushed to the spot. The injured, identified as Chipemshang Ruiva (33), was taken to Ukhrul district hospital for treatment.
In a separate pre-dawn assault in Kamjong district around 3:30am, suspected Kuki militants from across the border attacked three Tangkhul Naga villages—Namlee, Wanglee, and Choro—under Kasom Khullen police station jurisdiction, between border pillars 89 and 95. At least five villagers sustained injuries while as many as 15 houses were vandalised and set ablaze. Namlee and Wanglee villages are located approximately 50km and 18km from the police station respectively. The coordinated attacks have heightened tensions in the ethnically sensitive border region, where violence between communities has persisted.
Authorities have not reported any casualties but have intensified security measures to prevent further escalation. The incidents come amid ongoing ethnic strife in Manipur, with previous gunfights reported between suspected Kuki and Tangkhul groups in Ukhrul. Local residents expressed fear over repeated border incursions, demanding stronger deployment of forces. Police investigations are underway to identify the attackers and restore normalcy in the affected areas.
