Desk Correspondent , Dispur - A moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Assam and surrounding regions on Monday morning, triggering panic among residents. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located in the Nagaon district of Central Assam. The tremors, which lasted for several seconds, were felt strongly in Guwahati, the state’s largest city, as well as in neighboring states like Meghalaya and parts of northern Bangladesh.

Despite the intensity of the shaking, state disaster management authorities confirmed that there have been no reports of injuries or significant damage to property so far. In many urban areas, people were seen rushing out of their homes and office buildings into open spaces as a precautionary measure. Local officials have conducted preliminary checks on vital infrastructure, including bridges and power stations, reporting that services remain operational across the affected districts.

Northeast India falls under Seismic Zone V, making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. While today’s event did not result in a catastrophe, seismologists have reminded the public to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols, as aftershocks are common following a quake of this magnitude. The state government has placed emergency response teams on standby to monitor the situation and assist any remote areas that may report minor structural cracks in the coming hours.
