Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Spain has deployed its armed forces to the North African enclave of Ceuta after thousands of migrants crossed into the territory from Morocco. At least 18 people died in the attempt, and the surge overwhelmed local authorities and reception centres.

The crossings happened by swimming and by forcing their way through the frontier near Tarajal beach, creating chaos along the border. Spanish and local officials said the influx was among the largest in years and quickly revived memories of the 2021 crisis, when Ceuta was flooded by migrants in just two days.

Madrid responded by sending soldiers to support the Civil Guard and restore security in the enclave. Ceuta’s regional government had already asked for a national emergency declaration, saying the situation had stretched emergency services and left reception centres over capacity.

The deaths appear to have been caused by a mix of drowning and stampede conditions during the mass crossing. The crisis has also reopened political tensions over migration control, border enforcement and Spain’s relationship with Morocco.

Ceuta remains the focus of a fast-moving humanitarian and security emergency. With the army on the ground and more migrants still trying to cross, the pressure on Spain’s border system is likely to stay high.
