12 Years of Tax Reforms Under Modi: What Changed for Indians

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Prime Minister Narendra Modi's milestone as India's longest-serving continuously elected Prime Minister coincides with the completion of 12 years of the NDA government's economic and fiscal reforms. During this period, India's taxation system underwent a significant transformation aimed at simplifying compliance, broadening the tax base, increasing transparency, and leveraging technology to improve efficiency for taxpayers and businesses alike.

One of the most significant changes was the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017, which replaced multiple indirect taxes with a unified nationwide tax structure. The reform streamlined taxation across states, reduced cascading taxes, and created a common national market. Over the years, GST rates have undergone multiple revisions, with several essential goods moved to lower tax slabs while compliance processes have increasingly shifted online. The government has also strengthened digital monitoring mechanisms to improve tax collection and reduce evasion.

On the direct tax front, taxpayers witnessed the rollout of a new income-tax regime offering lower tax rates with fewer exemptions, alongside the modernization of tax administration through faceless assessments and appeals. The expansion of digital filing systems, faster tax refunds, increased use of data analytics, and simplified compliance procedures have transformed interactions between taxpayers and authorities. At the same time, measures such as higher TDS reporting requirements, stricter disclosure norms, and enhanced digital scrutiny have increased accountability within the tax ecosystem.

Over the past 12 years, India's taxation framework has evolved from a largely paper-driven system into a technology-enabled ecosystem focused on transparency, efficiency, and compliance. While debates continue regarding the impact of various reforms on businesses and individuals, the period has undeniably marked one of the most significant transformations in the country's tax administration history.
