Prayagraj Cop Welcomes Floodwaters with Rituals Calls It Blessing from Mother Ganga

PRAYAGRAJ — In a moment that has sparked curiosity, debate, and even amusement online, a police officer in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj was seen performing a religious offering to floodwater entering his residence, referring to it as "Mother Ganga."

The video, which has gone viral across social media platforms, shows the officer stepping out of his home holding a copper vessel filled with milk and a handful of flowers. As floodwater laps at his doorstep, he pours the contents into it, bowing his head in reverence. The plaque outside identifies the residence as “Nishad Raj Bhavan,” adding to the symbolic imagery, as Nishad Raj is a revered figure in Indian mythology closely associated with the river Ganga.

"Ye Ganga maa hain. Agar woh mere ghar aa gayi hain, to main unka swagat karunga, virodh nahin (This is Mother Ganga. If she has come to my home, I will welcome her, not oppose her)," the officer reportedly said when asked about his actions.

While many have appreciated the gesture as a personal expression of faith and cultural reverence, others online have raised concerns about the role of superstition in public service. Some questioned whether such actions by a law enforcement officer undermine scientific temper and rationality, especially in flood-prone regions where safety and preparedness are crucial.

“This is not just about culture; it’s about priorities. Floodwater causes damage and displacement — it shouldn’t be romanticized,” said a flood relief volunteer who has been working in the region for over a week.

Still, others defended the officer, saying that respecting nature and maintaining spiritual beliefs doesn't necessarily interfere with professional duties. “This is part of Indian tradition — we worship rivers, even when they show their fury,” commented a local priest from the Sangam area.
