Live-In Relationships Now Require Registration or Face Jail Time in Uttarakhand
Uttarkhand - In a groundbreaking development, Uttarakhand has enacted the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), mandating that all live-in relationships be officially registered within 30 days of notification. Non-compliance could lead to penalties, including imprisonment for up to three months or fines up to ₹25,000.
This progressive legislation aims to standardize personal laws across the state, encompassing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships. Notably, individuals under 21 entering live-in relationships must obtain parental consent, reflecting a commitment to protecting younger adults.
The UCC also addresses polygamy, bans 'halala' practices, and ensures equal rights for women, irrespective of religion. Children born from live-in relationships are granted inheritance rights, reinforcing the state's dedication to safeguarding children's welfare.
While the UCC is a significant step toward legal uniformity, it has sparked debates. Critics argue that it may infringe on personal freedoms and cultural practices. However, proponents view it as a move toward gender equality and social justice.
