Fear on the Tracks: How a Rumor Sparked a Deadly Train Tragedy

Maharashtra - On January 22, 2025, panic erupted on the Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express near Maheji station in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district. A misunderstanding triggered by a tea vendor’s shout led passengers to believe a fire had broken out on the train. Fearing for their lives, some passengers pulled the emergency chain to halt the train and began disembarking in a desperate attempt to escape the perceived danger.

A Fatal Misstep

As passengers evacuated onto the adjacent track, tragedy struck. The Bengaluru-New Delhi Karnataka Express, traveling at high speed, came barreling down the same track. Thirteen individuals, including seven Nepalese nationals, were struck and killed instantly. Ten others sustained injuries, including the passengers who unknowingly started the panic.

Government Response and Compensation

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Maharashtra government announced ₹5 lakh in compensation to the families of the deceased and pledged to cover medical expenses for the injured. The Indian Railways Ministry also promised financial aid, including ₹1.5 lakh for the deceased’s next of kin and smaller amounts for those injured.
